target audience - 4/9/18 Tuesday

For this week we have made progress with the microelements of filming, focused more on sound and editing. We have done a lot of research and practised a lot of case study and practice questions with the teacher to prep us for our mocks. We went on to studying sound first and I learned about diegetic, non-diegetic sounds and how sounds can bring a different meaning to the film. I think this is what I enjoyed most. I also enjoyed writing about how sound can create meaning from a certain clip or movie which was kind of like an exam practice. There was nothing I found particularly hard as I enjoyed the challenge of writing. For my plan of action next week, it would mainly depend on the teacher and his teaching plan. It is likely we would continue learning about the microelements.

Age - children, young adults

Spending power - disposable income (money to spend) or tight budgets?

CASE STUDY - 4.9.18

TOMB RAIDER

TINKERBELL

demographic - aimed at young children
life style - again, english speaking class,
class - for most class because i think the movie should be available for everyone to watch
age - could be universal, there is nothing rated with this movie
gender - mostly for girls, there is no restriction to no boys but the protagonist is a girl and the fantasy of fairies are mostly for girls.
enthincity - could be all, by the enlgish language, it could be for the western culture, because no subtitles, but sometimes the dub changes language, target audience global.
spending power - could be for all, available for children.

demographic -  more for young adults who are interested in current trends or action, enjoyed by mostly male audience
mention: sexualisation of females (not fit for children), camera angles shots of females (male gaze), clothing, action fighting scene
editing style: a bit too fast and too pacy, not fit for older age.
LIFE STYLE - i guess not business, high, elegant, but the people with of good literacy and education to understand the scenes.
CLASS - medium or high
AGE -  for young adults or a little older. not for age more than 45.
GENDER - mostly for male audience
ETHNICITY - for all, or most for the westerners, by the opening only , it could be for universal,
SPENDING POWER - must have disposable income, the movie seem to made of high budget with famous actress and robots, so the ticket price can be high.

"media convergence" - when media of all types comes together. this movie is adapted from the game Tomb Raider back in the 90's.

first draft - 5.9.18

Tomb Raider and Tinker Bell are targeted at different gender audience. The movie Tomb Raider is mostly aimed at males whereas Tinkerbell is mostly aimed at females. Tomb Raider mostly consists of violent and actions scenes which are mostly enjoyed by the male gender for example there is an entire scene sequence that features the protagonist uses her gun; the use of cinematography to promote violence according to the plot to fight against the robot. Addition to the media convergence of turning the video game into a movie, the target to male audience was even clear because I believe these types of action/adventure games are enjoyed by males. On the contrary, Tinker Bell focus on female demographic. The opening starts off with a narrative that mentions about fairy tale which are usually fantasized by females and the idea of fairies promotes 'dreams/hopes' for (especially young) girls to become part of the fairy tale itself. Especially since the protagonist, Tinker Bell, is a girl herself, the animation of her being born from 'a baby's first laugh' displays a very soft and happy yet magical theme/idea which will be mostly appeal to the female audiences. To summarize, as you can see from these examples Tomb Raider and Tinker Bell have different target audience in relation to gender.

[ tips to get more marks: mention a lot of example; even about techniques used, camera angles, transitions, props, etc. ]

target audience: 2 - 06.09.18

EXERCISE

1. Name: Eraser Head.  target audience: niche
2. Name: Avatar: target audience: mainstream
3. Name: Memento. target audience: niche
4. Name: Harry Potter. target: main stream
5. Name: Old Boy. target: niche
6. Name: Jaws. target: main stream.

what is mainstream audience?
     > is known to incorporate a wide range of people, something with popular appeal.

eg. avatar was a very popuar film therefore would appeal to a lot of people. avatar was easily available screen at lots of
cinemas all over the world, it was rated PG 13 and released during a holiday period. the narrative easily accessible for all ages and genders.

this audience would be involved in the texts for entertainment or social integration, some may feel they need to watch mainstream media texts because it makes it easier to be involved in conversation with friends, family and any type of social life.

[ think about when a Film is released/aired? it's content? how it is covered across other media platforms (media convergence)? what is the mind-set of the audience? what LCAGES target audience would it appeal to?

what is a niche audience?
ths refers to a specific, particular small, group of people. the media product would be unpopular.
eg. "memento" would have a niche audience. it was released at the sundance film festival, not screened in cinemas and went straight to DVD.
it was rated r for violence, language and some drug content. it features a complex and disturbing narrative.
therefore would only appeal to a small, niche target audience.

these tend to watch media texts that are ineresting to them in particular. media texxts may be more difficult to access and have less ocverage across media platforms.
miche audiencs tend to be people that are more individual in their tastes and opinions.

media convergence - 07/09/18

"Media convergence is a term that can refer to either: 1) the merging of previously distinct media technologies and media forms due to digitization and computer networking; or 2) an economic strategy in which the media properties owned by communications companies employ digitization and computer networking to work together (see Media Ownership)." https://www.thecanadianencyclopedia.ca/en/article/media-convergence/

Media convergence is how production companies use a variety of media to display their product.

eg. film production companies often have parent companies (conglomerates) that own or use other (subsidiary) companies to advertise and market their product through print, video, radio, apps, social media and the internet.

Why is Cross Media Convergence possible?

Cross Media convergence is made possible by Technological development and convergence.

Technological convergence is how techonology allows media texts to be produced and distributed on multiple media devices.

(mobility, size, access, speed, ease, distribution, interaction, )

eg. "To All the Boys I've Loved Before" have uses media convergence to promote the film on many different sites such as social media or even Youtube. It is possible by advertising all over on the Internet by displaying it's trailer on each platform. It is made possible by using the Netflix brand name as it is also a original film.

FILM GRATIFICATION

TOP 10 iMDB FILMS OF ALL TIME

the shawshark redemption:  This movie made me laugh and it made me cry, This is probably my 2nd or 3rd favorite movie ranked in my top 5 list. The movie is based in a prison, where violence, sexual references and profanity are part of the daily life. The story line is excellent with great performances from Tim Robbins and Morgan Freeman especially

the godfather:  With performances, style and substance to savour, this shows how it is possible to smash box office records without being mindless
the godfather part 2:  Ledger’s performance is monumental, but The Dark Knight lives up to it.
the dark knight:  legendary, batman, a great sequal
12 angry men:  plot is awesome, script especially
schindlers list:
pulp fiction
the lord of the rings: the fellowship of the rings:
the good, the bad, and the ugly:
fight club:

BLUMLER AND KATZ 1974
their uses and gratifications theory suggests that media users contribute and have an active role in the media. you are engaged and taking part with the film.

the user has 4 simple needs:

- personality indentity (using media to find out more about yourself)
- surveillance (using the media to find out what is going on around us)

- education
- entertainment
- escapism
- social interaction
- relating to characters and situations

case study / exam practice

FIGHT CLUB // THERE WILL BE BLOOD - first draft

comparison: they seem to have the same target audience. it looks like they start from niche and soon becomes mianstream. includes various action scenes. the movie takes place in different time eras. the plot/trailer/opening gives a different vibe. it looks like There Will Be Blood attracts more of the older generation of men. Because of the plot as well as the theme of fighting over oil. It is a historic piece of movie. age.

life style: i belive more sophisticated would enjoy movies like there will be blood. .Fight Club also seem to attract the younger generations. It got a heart-touching plot like with a full action-pack scenes but the movie there will be blood includes more deeper meaning to it while recreating the historical plot.

spending power: the two is likely to be similar because they include award-winning actors in it and the productioin seem to be of high budget. so the target could be mainly main stream or those of with disposable income.
