RESEARCH INSTITUTION

Introduction - 15.March.2019

440px-Pyramid_of_Capitalist_System.jpg

The picture shows the series of hegamony hierarchy that shows who is in power. The bottom of the pyramid shows the workers who 'feeds all and works for all' and the one above are the aristocrats 'who eat for you' and the above are the soldiers 'who shoot you' and the above is the politicians 'who fools you' and at the top is the royalty 'who rules you' but what lies above them all is money.

Also shows a class structure. Language in French - criticizes the captilaist system and reminds us of French Revloution.

Hegamony

This image shows the Gramsci' theory to hegemony functions where the sources of news are all controlled by certain cooperations in the modern world where not only TV programs and newspaper exist, but also the internet.

http://ahsan-habib.com/gramscis-theory-of-hegemonic-functions-in-the-age-of-citizen-journalism-and-social-media/

I think this shows how we are being 'fed' news from what the media institution wants the people 'eat'.

hegemony-1.jpg

Hegemony is the dominance or leadership of one social group or nation over another. It is the way in which those in power maintain their control.

Example: Just like the way the USA dominates other nation. Or slavery.

Subordinate: a person under the authority or control of another within an organization.

Hegemony takes place through either Coercion or Consent

Coercion: it uses the army, the police, prisons and courts of the capitalist state to force other classes to accept its role.

Consent: It uses the media and values to persuade the subordinate class that its rule is legitimate (lawful/justified)

How do these images Hegemony; coercion and consent?

The idea of Hegemony in this picture is used to criticize the US 'subjugating' the public. One is the 'inferior' race where the guns and weapons are pointed at, which shows coercion. The idea of using force and threat to appear as a superior being. The other picture is the 'US propaganda machine' which are the cameras and the microphones, aka the media, which are filming their own people to make propaganda for the others to follow. This shows consent where the institution makes the people think the same ideology by giving them 'the illusion of choice' to choose to follow the propaganda or not.

The act of media bias.

media_bias.jpg

Hegemony and Media

Hegemony has a massive impact on what is portrayed through the media (eg. the TV). It does this by reinforcing ideologies through consent. A news report that shows strong support for a controversial foreign policy decision can be said to support the government hegemony for example with the US and Uk invasions in Iraq and WMDs.

Stereotypes, representation, ideology.

First video: superheroes, Americanization. The idea of 'superhero' being smart, rich, a mutant, different from normal beings. The idea that 'America is the greatest' wherein Iron man, the terrorism in a middle eastern country is solved by Iron man and the American military, showing their power and dominance over the locals.

Second video: male representation in Disney. They make young boys think that males are supposed to act in a certain way which is different from females. They are physically strong, indifferent, greedy for power, etc.

In pairs discuss which films help to reinforce hegemony?

Countering typical stereotypes made in the past.

Enchanted, the Help, Black Panther, Glee, they always have to stay in secret, Christian family. sex ed, toxic masculinity is criticized.

Motion pictures, walt disney, avengers , against hegemony, lgbt never ends in a happy ending mainstream.

Using examples of films, explain how Media helps to reinforce hegemony?

The idea of hegemony is reinforced in films through ideology. They are made through certain representations and stereotypes created by movie directors which are then controlled by media institutions in the world. For example in America, where Hollywood comes from, the media products that are consumed by the people comes from only 6 different institutions in the country. The Hollywood ideology mainly includes the dominance of males over females, positive image of whites over black, and twisted opinions on LGBT in recent years, and many more.

For many years, it has been stereotypically shown that male dominance over females is absolute. They are to be strong physically, be able to have power to make decisions, control over a relationship with a woman, be unemotional on the outside. In recent light, this type of masculinity is called toxic masculinity. This can be seen in many superhero films from DC or Avengers where we see them as 'fighting for justice' but then are represented to be a weapon to use, not humans. This puts the ideology in many young males in wanting to become like these superheroes that save the world, but we all know too well this is only supernatural and the children can only dream of becoming one. But even in non-supernatural films, like Marvel's the Punisher, we see that the male is driven by revenge and 'thirst' for justice which leads him to violent killings at some times. Women are sometimes underrepresented or represented inferiorly in these films, where they do not play certain prominent roles and are only seen as subordinates or emotional creatures. In modern society, where problems arise from these stereotypes and hegemonic ideology, some of these representations are then countered to promote 'equality'. It is not only been till recent years where toxic masculinity is criticized and women are able to gain equal power as male. For example in a British comedy-drama on Netflix called Sex Education, we see various types of representation of males in the movie. We have a character, Adam Groff, whose physical attributes are those of stereotypical 'manly' type, bulky and tall, and have a rough personality and only shows lust and sexual attraction for females. He is then portrayed in a way which is criticized by both the other characters in the films and the audience in the real world, as we see him showing off his strength and power through bullying and chasing girls for sex. In a Disney princess movie, Enchanted, this follows a princess who has fallen into the real world and proves that the princess is not always the one waiting for a prince's true love. Males are represented in a very stereotypical way in the cartoon where the prince acts very much like a stereotypical prince and are then criticized for it. The princess shows her power in this light, fighting the evil witch herself and does not need help from a man. There is the male lead actor which is represented in real life to be imperfect and is shown to have emotions too. In the end, the hegemony that shows males dominance over females have been long represented in films since the early years of development but due to rising problems that occur in the real world, equality is now slowly promoted in movies and films, also music and video games where it is now okay for men to cry and women are now in charge of leading men.

Another type of hegemony through different social groups are between the LGBTQ+ community and the outside 'normal' world.  It always seems to be that in mainstream films, LGBT is not always represented in a positive way and are always seemed to be bullied, ignored, denied by their friends and family. There is never a happy ending for them, which could represent the ideology of LGBT people in real life, making the audience think that being LGBT is not acceptable out there in reality. This can be seen in many short films found on Youtube which is not mainstream, such as Goodbye Charley, FIFTEEN, or animations such as In A Heartbeat, or music videos like Tenny - 159 cm or Troye Sivan's Blue Neighbourhood. Or even in a mainstream film where LGBT topic is not popular, the Oscar award-winning movie Call Me By Your Name does not end in a happy ending either. There are also small mentions of same-sex couples in other mainstream films/series such as Shadow Hunters or Glee. The first negativity is the criticism of coming out of the closet by the individuals. They are also prone to bullying by the majority of others that are 'different' from them.

ideologies

1. What is your favourite type of food?  I enjoy most type of food, but I enjoy Korean cuisine the most.

2. "It is a male-dominated world"?  Agree

3. "Violence is needed to get some message across"?  Agree

4. "It is not what you know but who you know that is more important"?   Disagree

5. "Success is achieved by working hard"?   Agree

An ideology is a world view, a system of values, attitudes and beliefs which an individual, group or society holds to be true or important; these are shared by a culture or society about how that society should function.          media-studies.tki.org.nz

Dominant Ideologies

Ideologies that are told to us repeatedly by important social institutions such as the church, the law, education, government, and the media are called dominant ideologies.

Dominant ideologies are ideologies or beliefs that we live by in our day-to-day lives and often do not question - they have become 'natural, common sense' things to do. This effectively dissuades people from rebelling against these beliefs and keeps a sense of stability in society.

Dominant ideologies include beliefs about gender roles, about the economy, about social institutions.

Antionio Gramsci Theory

Gramsci theorized that there is a dominant ideology in society.

This dominant ideology is designed to help those in power maintain their control over society. What is this called?

This power, as well as being political and economic, is also cultural. He called this dominant ideology CULTURAL HEGEMONY.

Cultural hegemony serves the interests of the power bloc (ruling class), and perpetuates their dominance over the rest of the society.

The toery claims that the ideas of the power bloc come to be seen as the NORM; they are seen s universal ideologies, percieved to benefit everyone whilest only really benefitting the ruling class. This done in the MASS MEDIA through CONSENT. He refers to these MEDIA TEXTS as HEGEMONIC FORMS.

Eg. Cosmopolitan promotes the same hegemonic values in every issue.

What are they? What is the dominant ideology being presented?

(need to bring in google classroom )

Legally Blonde intro video.

Alines - Elevator scene

the dominant ideology in this video... women are tough, they do not follow rules, certain women who looks like her, uses guns, is not safe, in danger, might die, headstrong,

a girl can take care of herself and not need in any of men.

idea of using force to solve problems

the protagonist looks like a male. in order to be a strong powerful woman, you need to look like a man.

Using examples of films, explain what preferred readings and dominant ideologies they communicate?

In the films Legally Blonde and Alien, the idea of women is the preferred reading and dominant ideologies that are being communicated.

Mise-en-scene - Character

Legally Blonde:

how to be a woman, or what makes a beautiful person:

- blonde

- white

- nice body

- rich

- surrounded by the same people as you

- smart

- takes care of self

what happens as a result:

- boys fall head over heels, like 'hot' boys

- you have friends.

Puts the ideology into the target audience about the ideal feminity and being a woman. Especially growing up girls. They are making it so that the girls want to become like them, and anything apart is not of the same standard will be discarded and considered waste. They also make as if being surrounded by hot boys gives you social status and that you are 'desirable'. This objectifying of a woman is seen as the norm and the repetition of this ideology in other high school films makes it as if though this is what girls should thrive for as they are growing up.

Alien, the woman is:

- strong

- uses force

- brave

- takes risk

- short hair

- shows off the body, don't care about body

- muscular

This on the surface may seem like woman empowerment and equality to the female gender, being able to do the same job as men. But actually, the subtext meaning is that all strong powerful women that do the same job as men, have to look like men, act like men, throw away the 'feminity' norm and become 'masculine'.

This puts in the ideology to the female viewers out there to either do the same, or you stay away from being like her, you do not become powerful yourself otherwise you lose your identity as female and risks life. Comparing the two movies, it shows and put out an image of what a woman should be or what they should look like and what other women out there are supposed to go for and to look like.

CAPITALISM

This image shows the literal action of the people in power squeezing all the money from the less fortunate in terms of touture in this picture. In real life, the people in power do this by giving them high taxation rates. The people in power are show in top hats and suits and fat which stereotypically shows a capitalist man in power and the less fortunate are the ones

Capitalism

An economic system in which the means of production of goods or services are privately owned and operated for a profit.

Screen Shot 2019-03-27 at 8.33.56 AM.png

4 major characteristics of capitalism

- business capital is privately owned in the economy

- buyers and sellers control the economy

- free will to spend money

- minimal government supervision

Applying our knowledge of capitalism in real life.

Trickle down economics:

the idea of the institutions that have the money is passed onto their shareholders and employees, which is then used and passed on in the economy where more businesses and employees get paid to live a decent living. This proves everyone who works will get what they deserve. Some think rich men (fat cats) are evil for taking tax from the poor but now in the modern economy, it has changed.

Definition: it is a term used to describe the belief that if high-income earners gain an increase in salary, then everyone in the economy will benefit as their increased income and wealth filter through to all sections in society.

Rethink Capitalism

Individual Material Gain - The accumulation of wealth, assets, celebrity or fame by one person.

Income-Inequality-tower-86549242f7c810a8

Explain using precise examples of how Films reflect the capitalist system in which we live?

Yes it reflects it - in a positive way, in a negative way

No, it does not reflect -

Hunger Games - an alternation of the real world in an alternate universe. Shows the idea of the individual material gain. The class difference between the game players and the elites are represented differently by using mise en scenes, such as costume and settings. The idea of how we use the poor as means of 'entertainment' by watching them kill each other and dress them up in dresses and give the illusion of being the 'chosen one' to stand above all the other district workers. This Hollywood movie could possibly be criticizing the capitalist society where it promises trickle down economics but then what actually happens is the people in power gain most if not all of the benefits to the society.

Great Gatsby - the idea of the American Dream. positive. tragic ending. but a deeper meaning.

The Wolf of Wall Street - well reflects on the capitalist society, the movie may even be criticizing the capitalist fat cats.

They Live - reflects the flaw in the society that we live in and the dominant ideologies gave to believe to the mass society. not really the capitalist society about money, more about power. the flaw in hegemony by media ideologies.

Crazy Rich Asians - the characters are of a rich society but does not reflect on capitalist society. actually supports equality, how rich people can be open to economy class normal people.

In many major films in Hollywood, films mostly reflect the capitalist society that we live in. Capitalism is an economic system based on the private ownership of the means of production and their operation for profit. The idea of trickle down economics and individual material gain are some of the characteristics that exist in capitalist society and are either reflected positively or negatively by movie directors. But there are also some that do not reflect on capitalism but the flaws in our society in general.

Positive reflections of capitalism include the reinforcement on the theory of trickle-down economics, where institutions with power and money will spend in the economy which will benefit everyone in the society. The higher the income, the more the benefits. The Academy Award-winning film, Great Gatsby with $353 mil box office, strongly reinforces the idea of The American Dream, where capitalism is likely to have rooted from. Mainly because it was set in the time where the American Dream was popular in 1922, and also judging on the production budget of $105 mil, it had cost that much to replicate the character of Gatsby or Daisy who was well-off in the film. The idea of capitalism is positively reflected in this film where we see Jay Gatsby due to his riches and businesses, he is able to hold such grand parties and have expensive possessions where he longs to be together with his lover, and the idea of money can buy anything, even happiness and love.
